5 -Day Intensive Birth Skills Workshop

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily
This workshop is designed for doulas, student midwives,
birth assistants and childbirth educators. The purpose of
the workshop is to improve birth outcomes by increasing the
skills and knowledge of birth attendants. The focus of the
course will be “hands on” learning. Pregnant models and real
babies will be coming to the course to assist us with
shifting the theoretical material into practical
applications.
The course instructor is Gloria Lemay, a well-known
British Columbia birth activist. Gloria worked for 17 years
as a midwife and now teaches in Vancouver. Her passions are
waterbirth, VBAC and ending circumcision. Gloria is the
mother of 3 grown daughters and she has a 15 year old grand
daughter.
She has lectured at Conferences for Waterbirth
International, Midwifery Today and the California
Association of Midwives. She is the recipient of the
“Women’s Voice Award 2002" and the “Waterbirth Mothers and
Midwives Award 2004". She is a gifted story teller and
teacher.

pelvis, fetal skull, and fetal circulation
- safe conduct of a home birth when the baby arrives
before the midwife or during transport. Tips and basic
equipment to have in your birth bag
- operating your business for a profit. How to
professionalize, expand your client base and get
referrals. Networking skills. Teaching childbirth
classes that are effective, fun and result in 100%
spontaneous vaginal births.
- coaching a smooth-flowing birth. Secrets of
overcoming stalls, fears and tiredness
- examining the newborn. What is that pediatrician
looking at/for? Signs of good health in a newborn and
what to be alert for in the first four days of life.
- prenatal care. What’s happening at the midwife/dr.
checkups? Client confidentiality, organizing handouts,
record keeping, palpating the baby in utero. Signs and
symptoms of anemia, pregnancy induced hypertension and
gestational diabetes. Preventing problems through the
prenatal period.
- principals of sterile technique and universal
precautions. Protecting your clients and yourself from
developing infections and disease. Supporting hospital
staff and/or homebirth midwives in maintaining sterile
areas and reducing the spread of infections.
- sexually transmitted diseases. Herpes Simplex II,
genital warts, and chlamydia. Where to get help and how
to best plan for a healthy baby.
- vaginal birth after cesarean. What it takes and what
the risks are. Success depends on planning plus!
- twins and breeches. Presentations that present
challenges.
This course is taught in locations throughout North

Cost: $400 (Cdn)
Pre-reading required. Bring any birth-related equipment you
own, e.g. BP cuff, stethoscopes
Bring lunch or purchase at nearby restaurants. Herbal tea
available for breaks.
